Welcome to BioWork

BioWork is a 128-hour certificate course. Students who complete the course are equipped with entry-level skills required for becoming a process technician for a biotechnology, pharmaceutical or chemical-manufacturing company.

BioWork is intended for high school graduates, for those in manufacturing industries who have lost their job, and for those who would like to start a new career.

Course Time-Frame:
  • During the Fall, Spring, and Summer Semesters, the BioWork course at Wake Tech is offered in both day and evening sections. Classes meet 3 days per week in 4-hour blocks.
  • During the Fall and Spring Semesters, it is also offered as a Hybrid Distance Learning Class in which students meet for lab one night per week.
  • Approximately 25% of course time is devoted to laboratory exercises.
  • The time-frame for course completion is one semester.

To receive a brief overview of these industries and the BioWork course, as well as to ensure successful completion of the course, prospective students are required to attend an information session and pass a placement test. One does not need to register for either the information session or placement test.

Potential students who have been employed in the biomanufacturing industry for at least 3 months or have earned an associate’s or bachelor’s college degree from a school in the U.S. are exempt from the placement test. Bring proof of degree to the Information Session.

Enrollment in each class is limited to 16 students. Instructions for registration will be available at the information sessions.

Information Sessions and Placement Tests are held at the Western Wake Campus at 3434 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary (Located near the intersection of Kildaire Farm Road and Road 1010).
